Having Sex in Water: Why It Rocks and How to Get the Most Out of It

If you love having sex in water (or even just the idea of it), you’re in excellent company. Water sex is exciting, it’s sexy, and it’s an approachable way to change up your sex life and keep things from getting stale. And taking to the water can be a great way to make sex more comfortable for those with mobility issues, too.

But as with any type of sex, there are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind if you’re serious about having the best time possible. Here are a few to keep in mind as you explore the possibilities.

Ensure your privacy

Whether you’re getting it on in your backyard swimming pool or an open body of water like the ocean, being seen or interrupted would definitely add up to a mood killer (and possibly also an indecent exposure charge). So make sure you’ll have your privacy before you get down to business.

If you’ve picked the tub or shower and live with other people, take a minute to lock the door just in case. And as for doing it anywhere else, time your fun so that you’re significantly less likely to run into anyone else or get caught. (Waiting until after dark is often a good idea, too.)

Don’t forget the lube

One common mistake many people make when they’re brand new to having sex in water is they assume they won’t need any lube to do the deed properly. After all, lube is meant to keep things nice and wet, and what’s wetter than water?

In actuality, water is really drying for the vagina, so you’ll definitely want that lube within easy reach. But your usual water-based lube might not do the job, especially if you’ve got your heart set on a longer play session. Try going for a silicone-based lube or a hybrid lube instead. Just make sure your pick is safe to use with any condoms or toys you’ll also be using.

Try doing it semi-submerged

Water sex tends to come attached to a lot more friction than most people are prepared for. But choosing your positions carefully can be super helpful. Instead of trying to do things completely submerged underwater, opt for doing things semi-submerged instead.

Doing it in a hot tub or a pool? Use the stairs to your advantage by having the receiving partner sit or recline on the higher ones while the other leverages the lower stairs for control during penetration. Getting it on in the shower? The receiving partner can bend toward the wall while the other enters from behind. Scan the scene for great opportunities to get into an opportune position, and don’t be afraid to be a little creative.

Take it slow

Water-based locations aren’t necessarily the best picks for very vigorous or rough sex, as it’s very easy for water to entire the vagina and cause lot of discomfort. And if this happens to too great a degree, yeast infections and UTIs could become a problem, as well.

Take it slow, at least until you get a feel for what works for you and what doesn’t. This not only helps keep the watery vagina issue at bay but makes it easier for both of you to keep your balance. And keep the lines of communication open before, during, and after. Let each other know what is and isn’t working so you can change things up as needed.

Give waterproof toys a try

Toys are a terrific way to instantly upgrade any sexual experience. They bring fantastic new sensations to the table that enhance the sexual experience for both partners. They also take the guesswork out of giving (or having) an orgasm so the two of you can focus on each other and get properly lost in the experience.

Just make sure you choose fully waterproof sex toys before integrating them into your water play. You’ve got your options open as far as the type of toy you go for. Try a vibrating cock ring or a wearable U-vibrator for a fantastic hands-free experience that won’t get in your way. Or add a waterproof magic bullet to the mix if you feel like getting creative.

Put safety first always

As fun as water sex can be, there are safety concerns to be aware of. Especially if you’re getting it on in a pool or an open body of water. Stay far away from deep water, and always err on the side of caution. (Remember, you don’t need to be fully submerged to have amazing water sex.)

All things considered, terrific water sex that will leave you both satisfied and begging for more is easier than it might appear when you’re brand new to it. Just stay safe, take care to communicate, and you’re sure to have an amazing experience for the record books.
